Cold winters test every window

Akron averages about 47 inches of snow a season, with January averaging under 28 °F and around 40 days a year that never get above freezing. Drafty sashes, single-pane glass and failed seals all show up as cold spots, frost and condensation on those days; see window replacement.

A city of older homes

Akron grew fast during its years as the Rubber Capital of the World, and many neighborhoods are full of homes from that era, often with original wood windows or early replacements. Replacing them well means careful measuring, attention to the trim and, in homes built before 1978, lead-safe work practices; see older homes and lead-safe window work.

Common questions

How long does window replacement take?

Many homes are done in one to three days, depending on how many windows and whether full-frame work is needed.

Are double-hung windows less efficient than casements?

Casements usually seal a little tighter, but a well-made double-hung with good weatherstripping performs well.

Do casement windows work well in snow?

They can, but keep snow clear of the sill and hardware before cranking open.

Why is my patio door hard to slide?

Dirty tracks or worn rollers are the usual causes. Cleaning helps; new rollers fix most.

Why is my bay window so cold?

Uninsulated seats and roofs and older glass are the usual reasons.
