Akron Rental Window Checklist

Many Akron rentals are older homes and duplexes, often with original wood windows or early replacements. In a Northeast Ohio winter, windows are where tenants feel drafts first and where condensation, frost and damp sills show up. This checklist helps tenants handle the simple things and report the problems that need a landlord's attention.

Simple things tenants can do

• Lock every window in winter so the sashes pull tight against the weatherstripping
• Run bathroom and kitchen fans while showering and cooking
• Open blinds and curtains during the day so warm air reaches the glass
• Wipe condensation from glass and sills on cold mornings

Report soon

• Fog or haze between the panes that won't wipe off (a failed seal)
• Windows that won't open, won't stay up or won't lock
• Torn screens before summer
• Peeling paint, soft wood or water stains below a window

Report right away

• Cracked or broken glass, especially in winter
• A bedroom window that can't be opened, including a basement bedroom window
• Snow, ice or debris blocking a basement window well
• Water coming in around a window during rain or snowmelt

Older homes and paint

Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint on window sills and trim. Tenants shouldn't scrape or sand old paint. Report chipping or peeling paint so the landlord can arrange lead-safe repairs. See older homes and lead-safe window work.

Basement bedrooms
