Fairlawn is a city of 7,710 people (2020) in western Summit County, a suburb of Akron. It was incorporated as Fairlawn Village in 1960 and became a city after the 1970 census.
What that means for your windows
Many Fairlawn homes were built in the postwar decades, when steel casements, wood double-hungs and large picture windows were popular. Original windows from that era are often drafty and hard to operate; see casement and awning windows. Replacing a large picture window with a combination of fixed and operating units can add ventilation without losing the view.
Mature trees
Shady lots keep homes cooler in summer but leave windows damp and slow to dry, which can rot wood sills. Check sills and the bottom rail of each sash every spring, and keep gutters clear so water doesn't spill down the window trim.
A young city
Fairlawn began as a village in 1960 and grew quickly enough to become a city within a decade, reaching 6,200 people by the 1970 census. Neighborhoods built in those years now have homes reaching the age where original windows are worn out or long since replaced with early vinyl that's also aging. If you're replacing a few at a time, an installer can help you match styles and colors across the house; see window replacement.
