Foggy Windows and Failed Seals

If you see haze or droplets between the panes that you can't wipe away, the glass unit's seal has failed. It's one of the most common window problems.

How insulated glass works

Two or three panes are sealed around the edges with a spacer, trapping air or gas between them.

Why seals fail

Age, sun, temperature swings and movement in the frame wear seals over time.

What it means

The window loses some insulating value, and the haze usually gets worse.

Replacing the glass

Often the sealed unit can be replaced while keeping the frame and sash.

When to replace the window

If frames are worn or several windows have failed, replacement may be better.

Warranty

Some windows carry glass seal warranties; check your paperwork.

Defogging services

Some services claim to clear fogged glass; results vary and the seal remains failed.

Cold climate stress

Akron's freeze-thaw cycles add stress to seals.

Get it checked

An installer can confirm whether glass or full replacement makes sense.

How fast it spreads

A few foggy windows often become more over the next few years as other seals age.

Keep records

Note which windows fogged and when; it helps with warranty claims.

Ordering glass

Replacement glass units are made to measure, so expect a wait between the measuring visit and installation. The installer measures the existing glass and notes its thickness, coating and spacer before ordering.

Matching appearance

New glass can look slightly different from neighboring windows if coatings have changed. Ask for a sample or check one window first if a perfect match matters to you.
