Reading a Window Energy Label

Most new windows carry an energy label with performance ratings. Knowing what they mean helps you compare windows for a cold-winter climate like Akron's.

The label

The label lists ratings for the whole window, including frame and glass.

U-factor

How much heat escapes. Lower numbers mean better insulation, which matters most in Akron winters.

SHGC

Solar heat gain coefficient: how much sun heat passes through. Lower numbers block more heat.

Visible transmittance

How much daylight comes through. Higher numbers mean brighter rooms.

Air leakage

An optional rating of how much air passes through the window.

Compare like with like

Compare ratings for the same size and style of window.

Climate fit

Energy programs often set different targets for northern, cold-winter regions.

Installation counts

Even the best rating depends on proper installation and sealing.

Ask the installer

Ask for the ratings of the exact products quoted.

Glass packages

Low-E coatings and gas fills improve ratings; ask what's included.

Keep the label

Keep the label or product info for your records.

Condensation resistance

Some labels include a condensation resistance rating. Higher numbers mean the glass and frame are less likely to sweat on cold mornings, which matters in a Northeast Ohio winter.

Glass choices

Ask whether the quoted glass has a low-E coating, an argon or krypton fill and warm-edge spacers. Each change shifts the ratings and the price, so compare quotes on the same package.

Ratings and size

Ratings on the label are for a standard test size. Your actual window may perform a little differently, but the comparison between products still holds.

ENERGY STAR

Some windows also carry an ENERGY STAR label showing which climate zones they qualify for. Look for the northern zone, which covers Ohio.

Ask for paperwork

Ask the installer to leave the labels on until you've checked them, or provide spec sheets for each product.
